In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, African philanthropists gave seven times the annual average number of large gifts for the previous decade, more than any other disaster in the past 10 years. Yet local NGOs, which are on the frontlines of providing support to their communities, saw only a small share of the funding, highlighting the historical challenges in Africa's funding landscape.
